Property Accessibility
Alumnae House, the Inn at Vassar College warmly welcomes all guests. However, due to the historic significance of the building, which was constructed in 1924, not all areas of Alumnae House are completely accessible. Removal of all physical barriers for complete accessibility is not readily achievable as such removal would threaten or destroy the historic significance of the property. So all guests can enjoy Alumnae House, significant steps have been taken to remove barriers where possible.
We offer the following ADA-compliant accommodations and features to accommodate guests with mobility needs so that these guests can comfortably access and enjoy the facilities at Alumnae House:
Accessible Entrance: A ramp leads to the main entrance on the north side of the building, providing easy access from the parking lot.
Elevator Access: An elevator is available, allowing access to all public levels of the building.
Accessible Restrooms: Accessible public restrooms are located throughout the building.
Portable Ramp: A portable ramp is available upon request to provide access to the living room.
Guest Room Accessibility: Two of the private guest rooms are ADA-accessible, featuring ensuite bathrooms and period furnishings.

- The Noyes Room: This ADA-accessible guest room offers comfort and style with two queen beds, a private accessible bathroom with a walk-in shower and teak bench, a spacious walk-in closet, and thoughtful furnishings throughout. Barriers to Accessibility
While Alumnae House, the Inn at Vassar College has implemented several accessibility features, individuals with disabilities may still encounter certain challenges due to the building’s historic architecture. Notably, access to the Living Room requires a portable ramp, which is available upon request. This means that, without prior arrangement, immediate access to this space may be limited.
Additionally, the main entrance features large wooden doors that may be heavy and lack automatic opening mechanisms. During events, these doors are typically propped open; otherwise, assistance can be requested via a doorbell to the front desk.
It’s advisable for guests with specific accessibility needs to contact Alumnae House in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made for a comfortable visit.
- The Crego Wing Rooms, The Garnsey Room, & The Gaines-Shell Room: These rooms all require four to five steps to access the accommodations.
Accessibility Goal
Our goal is for anyone who wishes to visit Alumnae House to be able to do so, regardless of their physical abilities. Among the ways we strive to comply with the ADA:
- It is our standard operating procedure that individuals with disabilities be able to make reservations for accessible accommodation during the same hours and in the same manner as individuals who do not need an accessible room.
- We have identified and described accessible features as well as physical barriers with enough detail to allow individuals with disabilities to determine independently whether a given guest room meets their accessibility needs.
- It is our standard operating procedure to ensure that our accessible guest room option is held for use by individuals with disabilities. However, we protect our client’s right to privacy in this regard.
- An accessible guest room, once reserved, is held for the reserving customer and is removed from all reservation systems. Guests with service animals will be provided access to all areas of the inn where members of the public are allowed to go.
- For special accommodation needs, please call us directly at 845-437-7100 so we can help you determine the best guest room to ensure you have a comfortable arrival and enjoyable stay.
